SAPediaA series of mini-lessons about SAP terminology and the SCEIS project Client Landscape StrategyThe SAP Landscape is made up of systems (also called instances) and clients. Systems (or instances): A group of clients that are usually related by separate phases of the implementation life-cycle. The SCEIS SAP Client Landscape consists of the following systems (instance):
Clients: Technical structure containing configuration, master data and transactions. one client is designated in the Production system, with other clients used for Development, Testing and Training.
Sandbox (SBX)The sandbox system allows new users to become familiar with SAP, and allows experienced users to test customizing changes without affecting the main customizing client. topDevelopment (DEV)The development system is the source of all configuration and application development activity. There will be several clients within the DEV system that will be used for configuration, unit testing configuration, application development, security and master data. Quality Assurance System (QAS)The Quality Assurance System will be used to support integration testing. It will be configured and developed from the Development system through transports. Training (TRN)The training system will be used to support the effort to train end users on the system. The preference is to have this as a stand-alone system, although it may be a series of clients on the QAS system. If it is stand-alone, all transports may be loaded in a controlled fashion so that training materials and training data do not become obsolete in the middle of the course. Training consists of a "Gold Client," which contains both configuration and data that will be used as a starting point for each training course. Additional clients will be established for each concurrent training course, and refreshed from the Gold Client at the end of each course, to prepare for the next set of courses. Production (PRD)The Production System will be used for all production end user activity. Prior to the initial cutover, the Production System will be used for stress testing and dress rehearsals. (In subsequent implementation, those tests are carried out on clients in QAS.) top |
